Flicker #29
The last show of every year
is always a little bittersweet for me, and tonight's show is especially
so. While I'm sure I'll enjoy the films as always, it's also the end of
my stint as emcee of Flicker. (I know I have a tendancy to wax a little
sappy in my comments on these pages, but I'll try not to get too maudlin
about my departure.) It's been amazing to be a part of this thing for a
couple of years--I continue to be amazed that we have something like this
where a dozen no budget filmmakers can get a couple hundred people to look
at (and generally, to like) their films. I don't know if I've ever enjoyed
a screening of my films as much as I have my screenings at Flicker and I
doubt that I'll be quick to find an adequate substitute (which is to say
that even though I won't be living here anymore, you're bound to see me
again). So thanks to all of you for making Flicker possible.
And in the interest of keeping Flicker possible, I'm happy to announce that
I've found a more than competent replacement for Yours Truly--Jim Haverkamp.
Jim's a swell filmmaker and, as you can see from the adjacent page, he's
also a champion of super 8. And he just bought a house, so he's bound to
stick around a little longer than I did, so you won't have to go through
another painful separation soon.
Anyway, I hope all this changing of the guard doesn't obscure our basic
mission which is to round you all up to look at another batch of local films.
And from the looks of things, it should be another good one.
Enjoy the show,
Flicker film grants
Congrats to Chris Jolly and
Jamie Harrar for taking home a roll of s8 and 100 clams (respectively) at
the last show. Both of them have films in tonight's program and both are
hard at work on stuff for upcoming shows. Who will the next "hundred-aire"
be? It could be you. If you'd like to be considered for either the $100
grant or the super 8 film & processing grant at an upcoming fest, email
your (formal or not-so-formal proposal) to Jim, your new master of ceremonies,
at flicker@ipass.net or mail it to:
