Flicker #25
If you're like me (tho you're
probably not), you've been eagerly anticipating this show all summer. Well,
it looks like it's bound to live up to the/my expectations. I'm especially
excited that all but one of our films tonight are prints--there's nothing
better than an evening of watching light shine through 16 & 8 mm celluloid.
If you're like me (tho you're probably not), you've been eagerly anticipating

are prints--there's nothing better than an evening of watching light shine

I'm also excited because tonight is the 5th anniversary of Flicker. The
more I travel around & see the kinds of festivals & screenings that exist
in other towns, the more I appreciate what a great thing we have here. In
fact,my own first real public screening was at a Flicker down the street
at Local 506. (The Norwood-style cover image is my nod to those bygone days.)
There weren't 200 people at the shows back then, but the people who were
there were supportive enough so that I thought it might not be a bad idea
to keep making films. I suspect I'm not the only one who has been similarly
inspired. So thanks to all of you who have come over the years & clapped
enthusiastically (or politely) for the local product.
With or without the trip down memory lane, I hope you'll enoy tonight's
program. Yours,
Best of Flicker, volume 2 If all goes well, we'll have yet another cause for excitement & fanfare this evening: namely, the release of the Best of Flicker, Volume 2 videotape compliation. (As I write this, I'm waiting for the master tapes to return from LA where Norwood is assembling them.) This is an especially noteworthy event because it includes not just films from Flicker--Chapel Hill, but also compiles films from the 2 active Flicker scion fests in Richmond & LA. The Chapel Hill entries are highlights mostly from the past year since the release of the first volume and includes films by Jim Haverkamp, Joyce Venimiglia, Brad Boll, Chad Benton, Sallie Patrick, Mike Powell, Roby Newton, and Yours Truly (RWBeebe). I could write a whole guide about how great the tape is, but you'll just have to check it out for yourselves. They'll be available over at the merch window for a mere $15, and, umm, they're a great thing to give out to Trick or Treaters...
stock report
Kodak tried to slip something interesting by us in their latest update to their print stock price sheet. They're now offering (at least on paper) a SUPER 8 PRINT STOCK. In the last guide I was griping about how useless the s8 negative films were unless you had lots of money for telecine transfer &/or blow-up--this is the answer to those complaints. I talked to the Kodak tech reps (who took about 30 minutes to figure out that they were actually offering it) & they said that they haven't made any yet, but that they would if someone would order 2400ft. That's a lot for one person, but not so much for a bunch o' folks, so if you'd be interested in trying it out, let me know & I'll see if we can convince Yale to get Kodak to make it. Just think--you wouldn't have to risk destroying your camera original each time you project it, you could have multiple prints of an s8 film, &c...
Flicker film grantS
Congrats to Jesse Seay for taking home the dough at Flicker #24. Tonite's grant (bringing the bonanza to $1800 in total grants) will go to some lucky filmmaker among you. Congrats also to Will Skolochenko, recipient of our 1st SUPER 8 FILM & PROCESSING GRANT. I believe Will is actually planning to show off his results tonight. (Big thanks to Yale Labs for the free processing) Tonight, yet another local superhero will leave with a roll of s8 and prepaid processing. If you'd like to be considered for either of the upcoming Flicker grants send a script, treatment, or lunatic raving to:
